Classic Cinderella tales
Disney's 1950 film 'Cinderella'
Athough not the first version of Cinderella, Disney's 1950 animation is the most well known version. Cinderella is forced to submit to the demands of her stepmother and two step sisters after her father's death. With the help of her fairy god mother, Cinderella attended the ball. She had a wonderful night with the prince, however, ran away at midnight as this is when her magic ran out.
The Prince searched far and wide to find Cinderella, using the glass slipper she left behind to find her. Although her stepmother attempted to destroy Cinderella's chance at true love by smashing the shoe, Cinderella and the Prince managed to live happily ever after.

Cinderella, or the little glass slipper by PerraultCinderella's father remarried and although he was around, her new stepmother and step sisters still managed to treat Cinderella poorly. When told she was not allowed to attend the royal ball, her fairy god mother used animals from the house to provide her with travel, she also gave Cinderella a brand new dress and slippers. She attended both nights of the ball and danced all night long with the Prince. As she ran away on the second night, as the magic was running out, she lost her shoe. The Prince proclaimed that whom ever the shoe belonged to, he would marry. Cinderella was eventually found and lived happily ever after, marrying the prince and forgiving her stepsisters.

Cinderella by the Grimm BrothersWhen Cinderella's mother dies, she promises to stay 'good and pious'. While continuing to morn her mother's death, her father remarries a woman who has two daughter. Cinderella, while being poorly treated by her stepfamily, planted a branch at her mothers grave and visited everyday. The branch turned into a hazel-bush. When visiting the bush, two birds would grant her wishes. One wish was that she attend the three day ball that she otherwise was not able. The birds provided her with a dress and she went every night. However, each night she ran away so the Prince wouldn't find out she was a 'kitchen-wench'. On the third night, the Prince knew she would attempt to run away so he smeared pitch not he staircase. This led to her shoe getting stuck and therefore leaving it behind.
Whom ever fit the shoe would marry the Prince. The search went far and wide, eventually leading to Cinderella's house. The stepsisters both mutilated parts of their feet to fit the shoe, however, the blood gushing out of the shoe was a sign it wasn't them. Cinderella tried on the slipper and it fit her like a glove, they lived happily ever after. The birds that granted Cinderella's wishes pecked out both eyes of the stepsisters. |
Altered Versions of CinderellaThese altered versions of Cinderella still follow the basic story line, however there are major differences. Whether it be the gender, time the story takes place or a complete juxtaposition on the original character.
Prince CindersPrince Cinder did not show any resemblance to his big, hairy brothers who went out all of the time. Instead, Cinders was small, skinny and was forced to stay home and clean up after them. One night when the brothers were off to another party, a fairy came and granted him wishes, therefore allowing him to attend the party. However, this fairy wasn't excellent at her craft. Instead of making him big and hairy like his brothers, she turned him into a big, hairy monkey. Cinders didn't realise this and set out to attend the party. Due to his size, he was unable to enter the party so he decided to catch a bus home. While waiting for the bus, he frightened a girl. At the stroke of midnight he turned back into himself, making the girl believe he saved her from the monkey. Cinders was so embarrassed he ran away losing his pants. The girl, who was a princess, claimed that whomever these pants belonged to she would marry, She eventually found Cinders and the two lived happily ever after.

Cinder EdnaThis picture book follows not only Cinderella, but her neighbour Cinder Edna. Cinder Edna was very similar to Cinderella, in regards to their home lives. However, Cinder Edna did not dwell on her situation, she instead made the best out of what she had. Instead of waiting for a fairy god mother to assist her, Edna attended the ball via bus. When Cinderella was dancing with the Prince, Edna enjoyed a conversation with his brother. The two had many things in common and truly connected. When Cinderella ran away at midnight, Edna realised she must too leave to avoid missing the last bus. Cinderella lost her glass slipper and Enda lost her loafer. Both men found the owner of the shoe they find, however it appears that Edna was the only one who lived happily ever after as her life was full of love, happiness and laughter.
